Mark Nicholls

Chairman

Mark Nicholls is a lawyer and corporate financier. After studying law at Cambridge he took articles at Linklaters before joining S G Warburg in 1976. He became a director in 1984 and head of investment banking in 1994. In 1996 he joined Royal Bank of Scotland and became head of their private equity group, leaving in 2003 to pursue a plural career. He is currently chairman of the West Bromwich Building Society and a non-executive director of Northern Investors Company PLC. He was appointed to the Board on 1 December 2010, was appointed as chairman at our AGM on 11 May 2011 and is considered to be independent.

Philip Howell

Chief Executive

Philip Howell is chief executive, appointed in March 2014. Following an early military career, Philip has spent over 30 years in the investment banking and private banking sectors, undertaking a range of leadership roles as well as gaining considerable general management experience. He was with Barclays for 24 years which included leadership assignments as Regional CEO in Asia, then as Regional CEO in South Africa, and subsequently as head of strategy & corporate development focused on the international and private banking divisions. For the past eight years, he has continued his involvement in private wealth management, firstly as CEO of Fortis Private Banking and latterly as CEO of Williams de Broe. Philip is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, Advanced Management Programme.

Paul Chavasse

Head of Investment Management

Paul Chavasse started his career working for the institutional fund management arm of NatWest, which was later merged with Gartmore. After a period in the private client businesses of NatWest and Coutts, his final role before joining the Group as chief operating officer in 2001 was as head of NatWest Portfolio Management in Bristol. He became head of investment management on 1 March 2012.

Paul Stockton

Finance Director

Paul Stockton qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1992. In 1999 he joined Old Mutual Plc as Group financial controller, becoming director of finance in 2001 and finance director of Gerrard Limited eight months later. Following the sale of Gerrard to Barclays in 2003, he left in 2005 and has since worked for Euroclear in Brussels and as a division finance director of the Pearl Group. He joined Rathbones in August 2008 and is also a non-executive director of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

David Harrel

Non-Executive Director

David Harrel was one of the founding partners of S J Berwin LLP in 1982, and was made senior partner in 1992. He relinquished this role in 2006 and is now a consultant to the firm. David has a variety of other appointments. He is non-executive chairman of Fairpoint Group plc, a member of the board of the English National Opera and a trustee of the Clore Duffield Foundation. He is chairman of the remuneration committee.

Sarah Gentleman

Non Executive Director

Sarah Gentleman started her career as a consultant at McKinsey and Company and then worked for several years in the telecoms and digital sectors, latterly as chief financial officer of the LCR Telecom Group. In 1999 she joined the internet bank Egg, the internet banking subsidiary of Prudential where she was responsible for business development and strategy. In 2005, she joined Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, the institutional research and trading arm of Alliance Bernstein as a banking analyst covering the European banking sector. Sarah graduated from Cambridge with a degree in Natural Sciences and also has an MBA from INSEAD. She was appointed to the board on 21 January 2015.

Kathryn Matthews

Non-Executive Director

Kathryn Matthews has spent her entire career in investment management, most recently as chief investment officer, Asia Pacific (ex Japan) for Fidelity International. Prior to that, she held senior appointments with William M Mercer, AXA Investment Managers, Santander Global Advisers and Baring Asset Management. She is a non-executive director of Royal London, Hermes Fund Managers Limited, Aperam, S.A. Fidelity Asian Values Plc and J P Morgan Chinese Investment Trust Plc. She is chairman of the group risk committee.

James Dean

Non-Executive Director

James Dean has over 20 years experience working in financial services. Prior to pursuing a plural career, James worked in a variety of roles at Ernst and Young over a period of 14 years, including holding the position of Managing Partner for the UK Financial Services Audit Practice for four years. In addition to his roles at Ernst and Young, James also served on boards outside the firm, including the chairmanship of the ICAEW Insurance Committee. He holds a number of other non-executive directorships including Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society and The Stafford Railway Building Society. James was appointed as a non-executive director on 1 November 2013. He is chairman of the audit committee

Angus Kerr

Regional director

Angus is Regional Director for the Glasgow office. He is a Chartered Wealth Manager and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment. He joined Greig Middleton in 1996 as a graduate trainee fund manager. In 1998 Angus joined Murray Johnstone Private Investors and following the take over of Murray Johnstone by Aberdeen Asset Managers he remained with AAM plc as a Fund Manager in the private client division. In 2006 Aberdeen Private Investors was acquired by Brewin Dolphin and Angus joined the firm as Divisional Director. Angus successfully attained his MBA from Strathclyde University and In 2015 he joined Rathbones to head the Glasgow office and is responsible for the investment management of private clients, trusts, charities and SIPP accounts.

Adam Jones

Investment manager

Adam has been working in investment management for over 13 years and specialises in the construction and management of bespoke investment portfolios on behalf of private clients, charities and corporate institutions. Throughout his career Adam has forged strong working relationships with a range of national and Midlands based firms of intermediaries including solicitors, accountants and independent financial advisors. Prior to joining Rathbones Adam helped to establish a Birmingham office for Smith & Williamson. Adam holds the CISI’s ‘Masters in Wealth Management’ qualification as well as additional Certificates in Investment Management, Securities & Financial Derivatives. Adam is also a registered member of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments. In addition to his day-to-day duties in fund management Adam currently sits on Rathbones collectives sub-committee with responsibility for the coverage of alternative investments, primarily discretionary & systematic global macro strategies.

Adrian Maxwell

Investment Director

Adrian joined Rathbones in 2004 following completion of his Financial Economics degree. Adrian joined the business as an Investment Manager’s Assistant and following continuing professional development has earned promotion to his current position as Investment Director. Adrian is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charter holder and member of the CFA Institute. In addition, Adrian is a chartered member of the CISI (Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment), having attained the Diploma and, as noted above, Adrian has an honours degree in Financial Economics from the University of Liverpool. Adrian specialises in the management of Charities and Private Clients. Adrian is invests in all asset classes on behalf of his clients, but is particularly enthusiastic about equity investments. Adrian is a member of the Group Stock Selection Committee. Adrian is a keen sportsman with interests covering Football, Golf, Skiing, Cycling and he has also participated in a number of triathlons. In contrast to all this activity, Adrian also enjoys relaxing holidays in the sun.

Alan Dixon

Dealing Director

Alan has been with Rathbones since 1993, originally as a Traded Options broker at Neilson Cobbold, and then as part of the Central Dealing Team since acquisition in 1999. He started his career at Charterhouse Tilney in 1990, before becoming an institutional salesman with Robell Capital in London. Alan is a Chartered Fellow of the CISI, and completed the diploma in 1996. He is also qualified as a LIFFE Equity and Index Options Private Client Stockbroker As Dealing Director, he advises Investment Managers on market conditions and technical matters relating to the execution of their orders, as well as taking a longer term perspective on changes to the industry that might affect the execution of clients’ orders. He is a member of the Liverpool Business Continuity Committee, External Broker Committee, and the Outsourcing Oversight Committee. Alan has been a member of Waterloo Rugby Club since the 1980’s.

Alan Martin

Investment Director

Alan Martin is an investment director for Rathbone Investment Management International and manages a range of private client, trust, corporate and charity portfolios. Alan is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment. Alan began his career in offshore finance in 1987 with AIB Bank in Jersey and prior to joining Rathbones in October 2012, he was responsible AIB’s offshore investment proposition.

Alastair Childs

Investment Director

Alastair Childs is an investment director and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment. Alastair has spent his entire working career in private client investment management in London, starting in 1984 at Vickers da Costa. Alastair joined Laurence Keen, which subsequently became part of Rathbones, in 1992.

Alex Clay

Investment Director

Alex Clay is a private client investment director with over 25 years experience of catering for the investment needs of high net worth individuals and their SIPPs, charities and family trusts. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment. Alex started his career in 1984 with Henderson Administration and in 1989 moved to start up the private client fund management department within the London office of Murray Johnstone (now part of Aberdeen Asset Management). 1996 saw a move to Guildford to develop the private client operation for Premier Asset Management, Alex then moved to Rathbones\' Chichester office in 2002.

Alex Richmond

Director of Tax

Alex is director of tax at Rathbones and has been advising private clients and business owners for 20 years. Alex specialises in providing capital gains and inheritance tax advice and has a wide range of experience in all areas of private trust work.

Alex Turnbull

Investment Director

Alex Turnbull is an investment director, his main focus is in managing assets for the not for profit, pension and corporate sector with a bias towards structuring segregated asset portfolios. He has particular expertise in corporate debt and equities, and where possible has a preference for direct investment of these asset classes. He chairs the charity asset allocation and stock committee and also sits on the UK equity and fixed income committee for the Investment Management division of Rathbones. Alex is chartered fellow of the securities institute and holds the securities institute diploma, having qualified in 1989. Prior to joining Rathbones in 2008 he spent 20 years at HSBC Global Asset Management (formerly James Capel) where he was responsible for developing and leading the successful charity division.
