Ocean Harvest Technology(OHTFollow | OHT, a producer of animal feed supplements from seaweed blends, has revealed promising findings from a recent study on the effects of its OceanFeed Poultry feed on broiler chickens challenged with necrotic enteritis (NE).

The study found that chickens that received OceanFeed Poultry experienced a notable reduction in mortality rates, dropping from 49% to 33% (P<0.05). These birds also showed improved weight gain and improved intestinal health. These outcomes further corroborate earlier research indicating the effectiveness of OceanFeed in combating Clostridium perfringens, the bacteria responsible for NE.

This data strengthens the value proposition of OceanFeed Poultry within the poultry industry. It will be instrumental in discussions with existing and prospective customers considering their adoption of OceanFeedTM Poultry.

Mark Williams, CEO of OHT, commented: "We are very pleased to see these results.  We have previously released trial data which demonstrates improved growth rates and feed conversion ratios in broilers and improved egg production, egg quality and feed conversion in laying hens with the dietary inclusion of OceanFeedTM.  This new data shows the additional benefits of significantly lower mortality in the presence of a necrotic enteritis challenge, highlighting the greater potential commercial advantages for customers using OceanFeedTM Poultry in their diets."

The Poultry Federation estimates the global poultry industry incurs a yearly cost of up to US$6 billion due to necrotic enteritis (NE), a prevalent disease in poultry caused by the overgrowth of Clostridium perfringens in the gut. As the use of in-feed antibiotics decreases, NE becomes more prominent.

Ocean Harvest’s strategy to offer sustainable and environmentally friendly products that help customers transition away from using antibiotics and harsher chemical treatments puts the company in a good place to take advantage of current and future trends. For example, UK sales of antibiotics to treat food producing animals have halved since 2014, and FDA data shows sales of medically important antibiotics for use in animal agriculture have dropped 25% overall since 2010 in the US.

OHT shares gained 6.7% on the news.
