Invinity secures key battery deals in Hungary and USA, prepares for UK LDES cap & floor bidding

Invinity Energy Systems (IESFollow | IES, a global manufacturer of utility-grade energy storage, updated markets on its commercial pipeline in the US, UK, and Europe.

The main announcement was a 10.8 MWh battery contract with STS Group, whereby IES will deploy its recently launched Endurium product to a large-scale solar + storage project near Balatonberény, Hungary. The deal is Invinity's second with STS who previously purchased a 1.5 MWh VS3 battery system in 2023. STS is now Invinity's main partner in Hungary.

STS' solar + storage project is supported by a grant from the EU, with the rest funded through existing equity and long-standing debt. The Invinity deal is expected to be finalised in Q2 2025 and the battery system delivered later in 2025. The batteries will be used to provide on-demand balancing for the Hungarian grid.

Invinity also announced a 0.9 MWh US contract with HITT Contracting, a major American construction firm. The contract is for Invinity's traditional VS3 vanadium flow battery to complement an integrated solar PV and energy storage project at HITT's headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia. Shipping is expected in Q3 2025.

Separately, Invinity noted the newly released update by Ofgem and the Department for Energy Security on the UK LDES Cap & Floor scheme. LDES stands for Long Duration Electricity Storage and is the Government's plan to boost the deployment of grid-scale battery projects across the UK.

The new update defines eligible technologies, splitting them into 2 groups. "Stream 1" is more mature solutions, such as pumped hydro storage; and "Stream 2" is more innovative technologies, such as Invinity's vanadium flow batteries. The document also defines technical specs of eligible projects, such as total power of 2.7-7.7 GW with an 8-hr storage duration and a minimum size requirement of 400 MWh. Projects must be viable for at least 25 years.

Invinity's batteries are well-suited to these specifications. A two-month application window will open in April 2025, offering two delivery tracks with entry into service deadlines set for 2030 and 2035 respectively. Investors can expect more updates on Invinity's participation and potential partners in the coming weeks. IES previously announced a partnership with Frontier Power to submit up to 2 GWh of bids into the scheme.

More positive news from Invinity as it continues to deploy its vanadium flow batteries across the US, UK, and Europe. The 10.8 MWh contract with STS in Hungary will see one of the first deployments of Invinity's next-gen Endurium battery, which builds on the popular VS3 to offer better efficiency and greater storage capacity at a lower cost. The release of Endurium was a significant milestone for IES on its path to profitability, projected by 2025/26. It has materially boosted sales, with a significant existing pipeline of contracts, including US and UK government backing.

The follow-on deal establishes STS as Invinity's main partner in Hungary. The Hungarian grid storage market is one of the most exciting in Europe, with the country setting a legally binding 2050 emissions target and exceeding its PV deployment target of 6 GW six years early. Hungary is now targeting 12 GW by the early 2030s, to be supported by 1 GW of storage capacity by 2030. STS previously purchased a 1.5 MWh vanadium flow battery system from Invinity in 2023, and is considered a pioneer of non-lithium storage in Hungary.

A quick recap on vanadium flow batteries (VFB). Flow batteries offer significant advantages for grid storage over better known lithium-based chemistries (such as LiFePO4) in that they are highly scalable, have longer discharge times, and can be fully discharged and recharged without any negative effects. In fact, flow batteries offer practically unlimited cycle life without capacity degradation. This all comes at the cost of greatly reduced energy density compared to Li-ion batteries, however this is not a significant factor for grid storage.

The recent technical update on the UK LDES Cap & Floor scheme was an exciting milestone for grid battery storage in Britain, confirming key final details before bidding starts in April 2025. The update was excellent news for Invinity as its products perfectly fit Ofgem's technical specs. IES' well-established manufacturing base in the UK should enable it to meet the by 2030 delivery deadline for the first track, giving it a competitive advantage in the bidding as most projects have longer delivery timelines. IES has already partnered with Frontier Power on up to 2 GWh of bids, with further updates on partners expected soon.
