Invinity debuts Endurium, its next-gen vanadium flow battery offering greater capacity and efficiency

Invinity Energy Systems (IESFollow | IES, a global manufacturer of utility-grade energy storage, announced the launch of Endurium, its next-generation vanadium flow battery, for general sale.

Previously code-named "Mistral", Endurium is an evolution of IES' vanadium flow battery technology used in grid-scale (GWh+) storage projects. Endurium will be offered in configurations optimised for discharge durations of 4-18 hours and features a number of key improvements, including lower cost of storage, greater energy density, simplified maintenance, and improved roundtrip efficiency.

Invinity confirmed that first shipments were on track to commence before the end of 2024. Confirmed customers include Gamesa Electric and Everdura Technology. Endurium has also been selected for 84 MWh of projects backed by the US Department of Energy, and qualifies as a 'Stream 2' technology for use in projects under the UK Government's LDES Cap and Floor Scheme.

Invinity has officially launched its next-gen vanadium flow battery Endurium, building on its widely deployed VS3 product, to offer better efficiency and greater storage capacity at a lower cost. The release of Endurium is a significant milestone for the company on its path to profitability by 2025/26, and should materially boost sales with a significant existing pipeline of contracts, including US and UK government backing. IES shares jumped 14% on the news in early Tuesday trade.

Prior to launch, Invinity carried out full testing of Endurium in cooperation with its joint development partner Gamesa Electric. The results were independently reviewed by DNV (an energy certification authority) to establish conformity with published specs. In short, Endurium retains and exceeds the VS3's safety, durability and longevity specs. For the UK and European markets, Endurium will be manufactured at Invinity's factory in Scotland. IES also has facilities in Canada and the US, expecting a significant rise in North American demand from 2026.

Endurium is the latest addition to Invinity's line of vanadium flow batteries (VFB). Flow batteries offer significant advantages for grid storage over better known lithium-based chemistries (such as LiFePO4) in that they are highly scalable, have longer discharge times, and can be fully discharged and recharged without any negative effects. In fact, flow batteries offer practically unlimited cycle life without capacity degradation. This all comes at the cost of greatly reduced energy density compared to Li-ion batteries, however this is not a significant factor for grid storage.

With their distinct advantages, we expect flow batteries to play an important role in the future of large-scale grid energy storage.
