Harland & Wolff Follow | HARL, the maritime engineering firm, has achieved a significant milestone in the fabrication contract for the Cory Barges, as the first hull has been approved.

This marks a major step for the project, and the hull will soon pass into the painting hall before scheduled delivery in Q1 2023. Significant progress is also being made on the second barge, with the next two well on their way. Harland and Wolff’s project team is closely monitoring progress on a daily basis, aided by the newly implemented IFS ERP Projects Module.

The work being undertaken on these barges has supported the facility in advancing vital shipyard skills which will be required for the Fleet Solid Support warship programme. The programme will create 1,200 UK shipyard jobs, around 800 further jobs across the UK supply chain as well as graduate and apprentice opportunities.

John Wood, Group Chief Executive Officer, Harland & Wolff comments: "It is fantastic to walk round the fabrication halls in Belfast and see them being a hive of activity, with our apprentices putting into practice the skills they have learned from our experienced workforce. It has been fascinating to watch the adoption of new technology with our twin headed robotic welding line delivering production improvements by a magnitude of four to six times against conventional production and welding methods. I am very encouraged with the progress being made and it is the perfect stepping stone towards full scale shipbuilding."

Harland and Wolf saw a transformational year in 2022, with three years of investment in its facilities resulting in a steady stream of contract wins across its four dockyards and five key business sectors. In June of last year, Harland scored an £8.5 million contract with Cory Group for the fabrication of 12 barges, swiftly building on this with a £9.6 million additional contract the following month. Following the signing of the second contract, the production line at the Belfast facility will deliver twenty-three barges in total, built to transport recyclable and non-recyclable waste on the River Thames.
